33 Public Speaking Tips to Keep Your Audience from Falling Asleep

Filed under: Speaker Tips,Video — Larry James @ 8:30 am
Tags: , , ,

Pat Flynn, Guest Author

I’ve learned a lot of these tips by reading and watching as much as I could about the craft of public speaking, watching countless hours of TED talks and similar high-quality presentations and of course, being on stage dozens of times myself.

Each time I go onto the stage for a new event, I always try to focus on one new thing that I’m going to practice and incorporate into my presentation. Obviously, you always want to do your best, but when you bring one new thing to improve each time it’ll help your speaking game tremendously and it’ll stop you from being overwhelmed with the process and trying out too many new things at once.

The video is 38 minutes and 50 seconds, so if you don’t have time now, bookmark this page and be sure to watch it later.

Is Someone Stealing Your Copyrighted Articles?

Filed under: Content Theft,Copyright,Video — Larry James @ 7:30 am
Tags: , , ,

It’s called content theft! Check to see if you’ve had content stolen from your Website.

Rendered white copyright symbol on white backgroundI did, and found that someone had plagiarized one of my articles and sent it to a Website that published it under her own name. It was copied word-for-word. After I contacted the Website owner, he gladly change the author’s name to mine and posted a brief bio and link to my Website.

Copyscape is the world’s leading plagiarism checker. Copyscape isn’t foolproof; it may miss text that has not yet been indexed by Google, but it’s a good place to begin.

Go to www.Copyscape.com – Copyscape empowers you to defend your site against the threats of online plagiarism. Copyscape provides a free service that allows you to easily search for plagiarism and identify instances of content theft.

Copyscape finds sites that have copied your content without permission, as well as those that have quoted you. Their “Resource Center” offers links to guidelines regarding Internet plagiarism. Simply type in the address of your original Web page, and Copyscape does the rest.

In defending your rights online against plagiarists, it’s important to be both vigilant and proactive. These four easy steps should help protect your content from being stolen (Source: Copyscape):

1. Place a plagiarism warning banner on each of your pages to deter plagiarists from stealing your work.
2. Include copyright notices on each of your pages to assert ownership over your content (© is © in HTML).
3. Use the automatic Copysentry service to detect and identify illegal copies of your content as they appear.
4. If your content has been copied without permission, take immediate steps to have it removed.

It’s a FREE service AND they also have a fee-paid monthly service called “Copysentry” which automatically monitors the web for copies of your pages, e-mailing you as soon as they appear.

Are Printed Books Dead? Are Independent Bookstores Dead?

Tags: ,

Best-selling author and store owner Ann Patchett (State of Wonder, Bel Canto) talks about the fate of independent bookstores and why a revival seems more possible these days than ever before.

For many years, independent bookstores were on the list of endangered species when national retail chains and internet commerce began to chip away at their consumer base. It left a city like Nashville, Tennessee (population 626,000) without a proper bookstore.

The BBC’s Franz Strasser paid a visit to Ms Patchett’s new Parnassus bookstore and spoke to customers as well as authors Myra McEntire (Hourglass) and Amy Plum (Until I Die).

Most statistics in the video (9:27) are courtesy of Al Greco, Fordham University.

Overcoming Glossophobia!

Do you suffer from glossophobia? As many as 75% of people have glossophobia.

What is it?

GlossophobiaIf you suffer from glossophobia you shy away from any opportunity to speak in public. Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking or of speaking in general. The word glossophobia comes from the Greek glōssa, meaning tongue, and phobos, fear or dread. Symptoms include:

• intense anxiety prior to, or simply at the thought of having to verbally communicate with any group,
• avoidance of events which focus the group’s attention on individuals in attendance,
• physical distress, nausea, or feelings of panic in such circumstances.

The importance of learning to speak in front of an audience is undeniable – invariably intertwined with leadership, motivation, and change. Glossophobia can be overcome!

“Do the thing you fear to do the most and the death of fear is certain.” ~ Dale Carnegie

Glossophobia is common, and in some cases it can be life-limiting. However, the success rate for treatment is extremely high. The first step is to find a speaking coach or therapist that you trust who can help you work through the fear.

I highly recommend that you…

speaking1. Practice your talk by speaking out loud. Get used to hearing your own voice.
2. Record your talk on a tape recorder. Listen for mistakes, the “ahs” and “ums” you use to fill in the blanks. I recorded at least the first 50 talks I ever gave and listened to them over and over to fine-tune the spots that needed work.
3. Practice, drill and rehearse! You need to know your material inside out, especially the beginning and the end.

The goal may be only to stand up for 30 seconds at a networking meeting to introduce yourself. When someone asks you to speak, say, “Yes!” You may be asked to talk about your book or something you have earned the right to talk about. Say, “Yes!” and get busy practicing. I have found it useful to practice in front of a mirror.

If you are just beginning to accept opportunities to promote your book or services, the goal is not to become a professional speaker, but to do the very best you can.

No one can be an expert at everything! Remember that. Have no more than one or two 15 or 20 minute talks to start out with.

I made no less than several hundred free talks before I started requesting a fee to speak. I talked to civic groups, chamber of commerces, and many other small organizations before I began to charge for my keynotes (a prevailing tone or central theme, typically one set or introduced at the start of a conference) and seminars (usually a 2 or 3 hour conference or other meeting for discussion or training).

Authors and Potential Speakers: The vast majority of careers involve some level of public speaking, from participating in meetings to giving presentations to potential clients and promoting your books. Once you have successfully worked through the worst of your fear, you might want to consider joining a speaking group such as Toastmasters, Dale Carnegie’s Secrets to Effective Public Speaking, and the National Speakers Association (NSA). These groups can help you polish your public speaking skills through repetition and offering speaker tips from fellow members. Building confidence in your ability to speak in public can further reduce your anxiety.

How To Overcome Fear and Shyness ~ Video

Josh Pais, Guest Author

Larry’s Note: What you are about to watch is profound. It’s a 13:45 minute interview by Marie Forleo with Josh Pais. Josh is an incredible actor, director and teacher. While you can look him up on IMDB to see everything he’s been in, you’ll be able to catch him this summer in the brand new Showtime series, Ray Donovan alongside Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight.

If you ever struggle with a fear of public speaking, shyness, or putting yourself on video, or getting on a big stage, or “putting yourself out there” you would be wise to watch this video. While, to some, it may sound like “hocus pocus” there is a message here for you if you watch it to the end.

Things We Say Wrong ~ Video+

Tags: , ,

In linguistics, grammar is the set of structural rules that govern the composition of clauses, phrases, and words in any given natural language. The term refers also to the study of such rules, and this field includes morphology, syntax, and phonology, often complemented by phonetics, semantics, and pragmatics.

The term grammar is often used by non-linguists with a very broad meaning indeed; as Jeremy Butterfield puts it: “Grammar is often a generic way of referring to any aspect of English that people object to.” ~ [1] However, linguists use it in a much more specific sense. Every speaker of a language has, in his or her head, a set of rules ~ [2] for using that language. This is a grammar, and – at least in the case of one’s native language – the vast majority of the information in it is acquired not by conscious study or instruction, but by observing other speakers; much of this work is done during infancy. Language learning later in life, of course, may involve a greater degree of explicit instruction. ~ Wikipedia

After one viewer watched this video they said, “Good job on creating buzz with this video. Few things stir people up as much as religion, politics, and language. But, to all grammar police: Grammar is the study of the way a language is used and it is a description of that structure. It is not a prescription for the way language should or must be used. So, if everyone else is doing something, and you are not, no matter how much you think you are being grammatically correct, you are more wrong than them. And, that’s what you ought to know.” Larry’s Note: 😉

Larry’s Note #2: A special “Thank you!” to “I Correct Your Grammar Because I Love You” on Facebook for calling the above video to my attention.
