Neil Gaiman on Author Copyright Piracy

Filed under: Content Theft,Copyright,Plagiarism,Video — Larry James @ 7:00 am

Neil Gaiman talks to the Open Rights Group about how the internet affects the books and publishing industry. People often ask me about piracy issues and digital rights management (DRM) concerns. I can’t say it any better than Neil has.

It has been long theorized that piracy does not hurt sales. It actually helps sales because it increases visibility. Tim O’Reilly said, “Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy” in a piece written in 2002. He has turned O’Reilly Media into a $100 million publishing powerhouse by correctly forecasting the tech industry’s movements. Tim O’Reilly has removed anti-piracy measures from his e-books. “We’re delighted when people who can’t afford our books don’t pay us for them, if they go out and do something useful with that information,” he says.

This video should give you something to think about. Regardless of your opinion, it’s worth considering. Below are a few articles that support the protection of copyright.

Authors: Protect Your Articles From Content Theft

Filed under: Content Theft,Copyright,Plagiarism,Video — Larry James @ 7:00 am

copyrightwww.copyscape.com – Copyscape empowers you to defend your site against the threats of online plagiarism. Copyscape provides a free service that allows you to easily search for plagiarism and identify instances of content theft.

Copyscape finds sites that have copied your content without permission, as well as those that have quoted you. Their “Resource Center” offers links to guidelines regarding Internet plagiarism. Simply type in the address of your original Web page, and Copyscape does the rest. It’s a FREE service AND they also have a fee-paid monthly service called “Copysentry” which automatically monitors the web for copies of your pages, e-mailing you as soon as they appear.

There are several different Copyscape banners to choose from to post on your articles. Hold your mouse over the image below to see a message that I use on my Articles Menu page. Also click on the image to see how I use Copyscape on my “Reprinting “Relationship” Articles by Larry James” page (the link opens in another browser window).

Recently, Copyscape found 2 of my articles on other Websites that were copied word for word with a no copyright or credit to me. After contacting those Websites, they complied with my request to add my name at the top of the article as author and a Copyright and brief bio with links back to my Website. Their other option was to take the article down.

Is Someone Stealing Your Copyrighted Articles?

Filed under: Content Theft,Copyright,Plagiarism — Larry James @ 7:00 am

stopthief It’s called content theft! Check to see if you’ve had content stolen from your Website. I did, and found that someone had plagiarized one of my articles and sent it to a Website that published it under her own name. It was copied word-for-word. After I contacted the Website owner, he gladly change the author’s name to mine and posted a brief bio and link to my Website. Copyscape isn’t foolproof; it may miss text that has not yet been indexed by Google, but it’s a good place to begin.

Have you gone ego-surfing lately? Another way to find your articles on the Internet is to Google “Larry James” + Articles (or “your name” + Articles). Note the quotation marks around the first and last names.

Video can also be a copyright issue. YouTube is beefing up its copyright infringement efforts, or at least they want to appear to be. They’re now requiring that users who receive a copyright violation notification watch a mandatory 4 minute 39 second video. “YouTube Copyright School” stars the characters of the Happy Tree Friends video series.
