Four Critical Writing Tips For Quick and Easy eBooks

Ellen Violette, Guest Author

When people have trouble writing an ebook they are usually making at least one, if not more, of these critical mistakes. Avoid them and you’ll find writing an ebook much easier than you ever thought possible!

ebook1. Don’t judge, or try to edit, while you write. Do a “brain dump” instead; get all your ideas out of your head and onto the page, then go back and edit. You use a different side of the brain for writing than you do for editing, so it is not possible to do both at the same time.

On top of that, when you do this, you start to obsess over every sentence, or every paragraph, and it slows some writers down to a snail’s pace and stops other’s dead in their tracks.

2. Use conversational English at the 9th-grade level to reach the widest audience possible. You are in the business of getting your message out to the people who need it. By writing at a 9th-grade level, you’ll be able to help more people, PERIOD.

3. Don’t do research until AFTER you write what you already know. Your writing will go a lot faster if you allow yourself to write what you know FIRST, then do the research to fill in the gaps.

Instead, what a lot of writers do is research first when they don’t really know what research they are going to need. This leads them to research, and research, and research, and never get to actually writing an ebook because they get so overwhelmed by the amount of information they’ve amassed that they don’t know how to organize or use it, and they become paralyzed.

4. If you can’t write it, talk it. Many writers tend to edit when they try to write, but nobody edits while they are talking, they just talk! Other writers are intimidated by the thought of writing. Maybe a teacher told them they couldn’t write when they were younger, or they got a low grade in writing and it made them feel that they couldn’t write, don’t let old tapes stop you. If you feel that there is no way you could ever “write” an ebook, as I said, just talk it!

You can record it into a recorder, or talk it to a friend. You can use a program like Dragon Speak Naturally that will transcribe it right onto your computer as you talk it. Or, you can record it live as a teleseminar, or webinar, and have it transcribed. Figure out what puts you the most at ease, and then just do it!

Follow these simple tips and you’ll be way ahead of the game. Work smart not hard, and you’ll have a quick and profitable ebook in no time!

eBook Writing: How Do I Get The Expertise In My Head Into An eBook?

The best way to get the expertise that’s in your head into an ebook is to first, figure out what your topic is going to be based on knowledge you already have. It’s a lot easier to do, when it’s something you are very familiar with.

eBookThen, figure out how you can shine new light on the your subject that will be of interest to your readers. Otherwise, there will be no reason for them to read it! You can do this by going to forums, chat rooms, discussion boards, and social media sites and see what people are thirsty for that they aren’t finding from other experts in your field.

Next. make an outline. Think of it like a grocery list. You wouldn’t sit and fret over making out a grocery list. You’d just think about what you wanted at the market and write it down. Do the same thing with your ebook.

Most people get choked up because they think of an ebook as a big project and they are trying to get it all down at once. But, really, it’s just one thought at a time. So make your list quickly. Ask yourself, “What do I want to talk about first? What do I want to talk about next? etc. And just keep going until you’ve got all your major thoughts down.

I once did this with my husband who is NOT a great writer and who was sure he could never write an ebook, and we got his whole outline done in about 3 minutes because he absolutely KNEW what he wanted to say. He just didn’t know how to get it down on paper until I prompted him. Then, go back and do the same thing with the points you want to make in each chapter.

An ebookWith this process, you can see how doing an outline helps immensely to get the knowledge out of your head onto paper in an organized and manageable way. By laying out your thoughts chapter by chapter and then the points you want to make in each chapter, you WILL develop a skeleton for your ebook.

Then, you can just go back and fill it in with the knowledge you already have. If you find this is too difficult for you to do, try doing a brain dump. Take a sheet of paper, or get on your computer, and just start writing everything you can think of on your topic. Get it all out of your head onto the paper.

Then, go back and look for the main ideas that you can turn into chapters. Then add the points you want to make in each chapter-turning your brain dump into an outline. And, if you run into spots where you don’t have the knowledge you need, you can leave them blank and come back later to fill them in with researched material. (Always do this last, so you don’t waste time on research that you may not end up using.)

Follow this process and you’ll never have a problem getting your expertise out of your head again!

Write an eBook for Your Target Audience to Make More Sales!

You may have only written print books. You may already have written an eBook or two. And you may not have known these hot-selling tips and therefore, made your book less successful.

judybiz2

Judy Cullins

Book Tip 1 – Write a short ebook first. Your online audience on blogs, Linkedin, Twitter and other social media wants concise information to solve their problems. Gone are the days of the 260-page book to show you as the expert. Business people don’t want to read long books. Think 50-100 pages if you want to sell it. People will gladly print up to 100 pages. Think 20 pages if you want to give it away as a bonus for your site or newsletter subscription.

Your specific audience is busy like you and wants tips and how to’s that help them overcome their problem or challenge. They don’t need long stories or analogies.

Book Tip 2 – Know that you really can make money from your eBook. They will sell over 2.5 billion copies in 2011. And you can use your eBook as a lead into your more expensive programs. Something to think about, yes?

Book Tip 3 – Write a non-fiction, how to book first. Use its profits to finance your fiction book. Why? Because your audience is out there online ready, hungry for your unique information.

Book Tip 4 – Know your preferred audience before you write your book. You’ll sell far more and get your business bigger visibility and credibility. . When you write a for a general audience, how do you satisfy each audience? These books are far harder to market too, unless you’re a Mark Victor Hansen marketing machine.

Book Tip 5 – Write your book for your audience, not yourself. Get your ego out of the way. Stop telling and start engaging! Many clients have come to me after they thought they were finished. They forgot to include in each chapter’s beginning a hook and the introduction, followed by a few benefits. In the middle of the chapter, they didn’t make use of headings to motivate the reader to keep reading. And, their chapter’s endings lacked conclusion that motivates the reader to go happily to the next chapter.

Book Tip 6 – Write a short title that sizzles. Your title should please Google to get ranked higher in search engines, and it should motivate your readers to read the rest. Put your eBook’s promise in the subtitle. Think benefits! Remember you have just 5-10 seconds to impress. Your title is the #1 hot selling point of your book. With an engaging one, you’ll sell 15% more books.

Book Tip 7 – Make your eBook a top priority if you want it to succeed, to brand you and to make individual sales. Let go of distractions and resistances. Too many potential profitable authors let “life” get in the way. Make sure you have your book’s promotion platform in order before you release it. When you set yourself up to win, your income streams will be full.

Book Tip 8 – Know your audience’s challenges. Then, write the book to solve them. Before you even think of writing a chapter, write your Dear Audience letter and say in your own words why you are writing this book – its benefits and how it will change your audience’s life to the better. When you know your audience before you write, you will write more compelling, concise copy that engages on every page, because it’s written for only that audience. Post a picture of your audience near your workstation while you write the book to keep it real.

The list could go on, but for this post, these 8 tips should raise your awareness enough to take a second look at your eBook project.

I wonder if you have any other tips to add to this small number? Or, do you have a question or comment on any of these tips?

Let’s get a good discussion going here.

P.S. These how to tips are taken from my book that started it all and is available on Amazon. Just click here for “Write your eBook or Other Book Fast”

Larry’s Note: eBook sales in the US increased more than 200% in February, 2011, overtaking trade paperbacks as the biggest category, according to figures released by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

Combining the latest industry studies from Forrester Research, AAP, IDPF and Publisher’s Weekly (Source: Accurance.com:

• In February 2011 eBook ranked as the #1 format among all categories of Trade publishing, and January/February eBook sales were 27% of total book sales.
• 2010 eBook sales were barely shy of $1 billion, up 400-600% from 2009
• 2010 eBook sales revenue was 7-10% of total book sales, up from 1% in 2009.
• 13 million eBook readers sold in 2010, up 325% from 2009 sales and twice the growth forecasted. 50% of those sales were in last quarter of 2010.
• The most ardent book readers – i.e. publishers’ most lucrative target market – are already favoring eBook. The average eBook reader already consumes 41% of books in digital form.

E-book sales have already passed the ‘tipping point’ of 20% of total book sales revenue, again ahead of schedule, and the richest targets for publishers – ardent book readers – are considerably beyond that point.

You Should Write an eBook

Filed under: Book Signing Tips,e-Books,Guest Author Articles — Larry James @ 7:00 am

Seth Godin, Guest Author

You should write an eBook!

I’m serious. Smart people with good ideas worth sharing can get a lot out of this exercise.

To help you out, I wrote a lens about the simple details of how to do it.

It’s technically easy and when it works, your idea will spread far and wide. Even better, the act of writing your idea in a cogent, organized way will make the idea better. You can write an ebook about your travel destination, your consulting philosophy or an amazing job you’d like to fill.

Apple_iPad_iBooksSeven years ago, I wrote a book called Unleashing the Ideavirus. It’s about how ideas spread. In the book, I go on and on about how free ideas spread faster than expensive ones. That’s why radio is so important in making music sell.

Anyway, I brought it to my publisher and said, “I’d like you to publish this, but I want to give it away on the net.” They passed. They used to think I was crazy, but now they were sure of it. So I decided to just give it away. The first few days, the book was downloaded 3,000 times (note: forgive the layout. It’s not what I would do if I was doing it today). The next day, the number went up. And then up. Soon it was 100,000 and then a million. The best part of all is that I intentionally made the file small enough to email. Even without counting the folks who emailed it hundreds of times to co-workers, it’s easily on more than 2,000,000 computers. I didn’t ask anything in return. No centralized email tool. Here it is. Share it.

A Google search finds more than 200,000 matches for the word ‘ideavirus’, which I made up. Some will ask, “how much money did you make?” And I think a better question is, “how much did it cost you?” How much did it cost you to write the most popular ebook ever and to reach those millions of people and to do a promotion that drove an expensive hardcover to #5 on Amazon and #4 in Japan and led to translation deals in dozens of countries and plenty of speaking gigs?

It costs nothing.

Changethis, which I dreamed up in a moment of weakness a few years ago, is still going strong under better management now. It’s the epicenter of ebook distribution, but there are plenty of places just dying to host your content. And your blog is the best place to launch your idea. The biggest challenge is that there are no barriers. If you want to do it, go do it. Ideas worth spreading, spread.

Larry’s Note: E-book sales in the US increased more than 200% in February, 2011, overtaking trade paperbacks as the biggest category, according to figures released by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

Larry’s Note #2: How do you autograph an eBook? Now, Authors, Speakers and Artists can personalize their work for consumers in unique ways through a process called, Autography. Autography LLC’s patent-pending method for autographing eBooks makes it’s official debut at Book Expo America (BEA) in New York, May 23, 2011. The video below gives you an advance look:
