What’s the Good of Talk Radio Appearances if I Can’t Pitch My Product?

Here’s how to be a great talk show guest and how you’ll benefit. Sometimes people are surprised – OK, dumbfounded – when I explain that they shouldn’t pitch their product during their radio talk show interview.

“What?” they say. “Isn’t that why I’m on the show??”

Actually, no.

Radio-Talk-Show11Show hosts don’t want to sell your book, product, or services. They want to provide information and entertainment that keep their listeners tuned in and paying attention. If you get on a show and pitch what you’ve got to sell, you’re a commercial – not entertainment. And that’s the fastest way to get your interview cut short or killed entirely.

So what’s in it for you?

Being interviewed on a talk show:

1. Positions you as an expert in your field.
2. Gains you (and your product/company/book) the implied endorsement of mainstream media.
3. Puts your name and the name of whatever you’re selling in front of a large audience.

In return, you give a great interview with useful information, educated opinions and entertaining anecdotes shared with friendly enthusiasm. That way, the talk show hosts keep their listeners tuned in, which helps them sell all those commercial spots – you know, the ones people tune out.

The best way to ensure you have a successful interview is to forget you’ve got something to sell and work your marketing efforts around the goal of being the perfect radio guest. How?

Don’t position yourself as an author or executive. Instead, position yourself as an expert on your topic or your industry. Sell only your depth of knowledge and your ability to help answer key questions about some aspect of your topic that may have been in the news recently. For instance, a realtor can talk about escaping foreclosures. A stockbroker can talk about how to manage your own portfolio. Experts on just about any topic can look to the newspaper and find stories related to their expertise. Find that news story and shape your media pitch around it, and include the fact that you have expertise in the field.

Engage the host. The host is your most important audience. People are usually fans of particular shows because they’re interested in what he has to say, so if you can engage him, you will engage his audience. Talk candidly and openly about your topic in relationship to the current events surrounding it. Make sure your advice is honest as well as conversational, and try to be as natural as possible. Listeners will be able to sense whether your interview is genuine. But don’t worry about entertaining them; entertain the host.

Don’t sell. Stay on topic during the interview, and when appropriate, mention the free material on your website that could benefit the host’s listeners. If you engage the host, give a great interview and offer helpful information, you don’t have to worry about selling anything. The host will do it for you. He’ll make sure his audience knows you’re an expert, he’ll share your website’s address, he’ll mention the name of your book or he’ll talk about the value of your product. He’ll do the promotion for you.

Have a website that does more than sell your product. If you are an author, provide free “tips articles” that explain your topic or your viewpoint in an informational manner. If you’re selling a product, create free reports or articles for your site that lay out the problem your product solves, again, in an educational tone.

With your great interview, you can drive radio listeners to your website in a non-commercial way that doesn’t make you sound like a carnival barker. The host appreciates you not sounding like an infomercial and urges his loyal audience to visit your site. If you’re really good, the host may even ask you back again.

And you achieved all this simply by resisting the instinct to “sell,” and focusing your efforts on helping the radio host offer listeners a good show!

10 Things to Know About Speakers Bureaus

If you’re a speaker, or you’re trying to build yourself into one, then your most immediate challenge will be, “How do I get speaking engagements?” In your quest to get bookings, you’ll probably want to know whether you need to consider joining a speakers’ bureau. Here are a few things to know before you get started:

mike1. It can be helpful to be part of a speakers’ bureau since it’s one way to get potential speaking engagements, but its usefulness will depend on who you are, how “in demand” you are as a speaker, and who your speakers’ bureau is.

2. Speakers bureaus are NOT a magic ticket to lots of speaking engagements. Most of them are not proactive, i.e. there is nobody out there “pitching you” as a speaker. Most are basically a listing service.

3. If you’re gaining a reputation as a great speaker, AND if you have an effective, dynamic website website with plenty of information about your speaking topics, a speakers bureau can be valuable for getting more traffic and increasing your bookings.

4. Speakers bureaus used to be much more necessary and effective before the days of the Internet. Nowadays it’s more common for speakers to do most of their bookings on their own through their websites.

5. Many speakers feel the best thing a bureau does for them is manage the billing and the event contract, which can be valuable and save a lot of headache.

6. A speakers bureau is probably worthless if you’re not yet an accomplished speaker, or if you don’t have a compelling website.

7. You could be rejected as a potential client by a bureau. Most won’t take you on if you’re not already commanding a minimum of $3,000 to $5,000 per booking.

8. It’s usually not a good idea to sign an exclusive agreement with a bureau, which would mean they’re the only ones allowed to book you. Maintain the freedom to book your own engagements independently, and to sign with more than one speakers’ bureau.

9. Whether or not you’re with a bureau, always have a “speakers packet” ready to send upon request. Have an electronic version available that you can email, and a print version to mail if they want a hard copy. Some speakers have their complete “speakers packet” available online as well.

10. Getting to know other speakers and networking with them, both in person at conferences and online, is much more effective than waiting for a speakers bureau to book engagements for you.

13 Ways to Write With Urgency

We’ve all been there. You start reading a non-fiction book or a blog, and all is right with the world. But then as you get into it, something changes. It’s not holding your attention. In fact, the word “boring” comes to mind.

writersdeskOne way to reduce boredom among your readers is to write with a sense of urgency. After all, if what you’re saying is not important, why write it?

As I read your blog post or non-fiction book, I want to know that you want my attention. I want your writing to be like hands on my shoulders as you look me in the eyes and speak. It’s about taking my time seriously. It’s about believing what you say matters.

Following are 13 ways to produce a sense of urgency in your non-fiction or blog writing:

1. “Omit needless words.” Nuff said? This one comes from The Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

2. Trim the first part. Often as we begin writing we need a few sentences or a few paragraphs (sometimes whole chapters!) to build up to what we really want to say. Nothing wrong with that, but then go back and trim the first part off. If we can read the rest without being lost, the first part should go.

MarkTwain3. Tell a story. If what you’re saying is important, there’s no better way for me to remember it than if you wrap a story around it.

4. “If you see an adjective, kill it.” –Mark Twain. (Okay, you don’t have to kill ALL of them. But reconsider each one.)

5. Move quickly. Don’t stay with any one idea for too long.

6. Use short sentences and short paragraphs. This gives readers a sense of progress as they read.

7. Get someone else to read it. Then ask, “Did it hold your attention?”

8. Give yourself a limited amount of time to write. This will force you to get to the point quickly, even if you have to go back later and fill in a few gaps.

9. Use word pictures, metaphors, and illustrations. The right one can do a lot of work for you.

10. Break it up with sub-headings. They are to readers what handholds are to climbers. They keep the reader moving forward while anchored in your topic.

11. Get practical. Turn the corner and tell readers how to apply the principles you’ve just given them.

12. Trust that you have enough content. Sometimes writers make the mistake of dwelling on one topic because they are afraid they will have nowhere to go afterwards. This just isn’t true! Say it. Then see what comes. I promise something will.

13. Read great writing. The more you do, the more you’ll learn, consciously and subconsciously, the tricks of the trade.

How to Heal Your Fear of Public Speaking

decision-making-processSince I recently gave a talk in front of more than 100 people and I managed to HEAL this FEAR of public speaking that was paralyzing me and I am sure is paralyzing so many of us, I decided to share some of the things I did to help me heal this FEAR.

“There are three things to aim at in public speaking: first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself, and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience.” ~ Alexander Gregg

1. START WITH THE END IN MIND – This is a really powerful rule I apply in everything I do and it makes a huge difference. It’s very important to see yourself at the end of your speech feeling the feelings that come from being in front of a big audience. See their expressions, the joy on their faces and see yourself as being super happy, super excited and very proud of your accomplishments. See in your mind’s eye the end result and focus on that until it becomes your reality… assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.

2. PUT YOUR EGO ON THE SIDE – If you care more about the audience and the message you want to deliver than you do about your own person chances are that you will find the strength to face your fear and to eventually heal it. Think of the VALUE you are offering and how it will impact THEIR lives. When what you say comes from the heart and it comes from a place of honesty, trust, love and passion, people will feel it and they will want to listen to what you have to say. Put your EGO on the side and focus on serving the audience in the best way possible.

3. TAME YOUR MIND – When I saw the room where I was supposed to give the talk I panicked. I would imagine myself on stage looking all scared and without saying one single world I would start running away from stage. Now I can laugh when I think of this but at that time I was really, really, really, really scared!

You will have all kind of crazy thoughts running through your mind and it’s your responsibility to tame your mind and to make sure that is constantly focusing on the things you want to achieve and nothing else. By doing so you will go from feeling scared to feeling empowered and grateful because you are given the opportunity to share your knowledge and wisdom with the world.

4. FIND A FRIEND – If you can find a close friend, a brother, mother, sister, a person whom you trust on helping you out while you give the presentation in front of them in advance it will be really helpful. They will give you pointers and help improve your body language, your tone of voice, the quality of the content and based on that the quality of your performance will be higher.

5. DETACH FROM THE OUTCOME – It’s so important to let go of all your expectations and to let go of your need to control the outcome. I know it might seem in contradiction with the first point – start with the end in mind, but it’s not. You want to gain courage, strength and confidence by seeing the end result in your mind’s eye since this will only help you focus and create a positive outcome, but at the same time you want to be relaxed and detached from how events will unfold. Just relax and enjoy the ride because in the end you will realize it was all about the journey and less about the destination.

6. JUST DO IT, AND THEN DO IT AGAIN ~ NIKE – After all the preparation, all the emotions and all the scenarios you created in your mind before the actual event, it is now time to take the stage and show the world what you are made of. It’s okay if your fear is not 100% healed. Just know that every time you get on stage to share your great skills, knowledge and insights with the world you will heal your fear little by little. Just go out and do it over and over again and you will wake up one day and realize that what you once fear so badly is now something you have come to love deeply. The stage will become your best friend and the audience your family.

There are two basic motivating forces: FEAR and LOVE. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections.
