What is the Percentage of Sale for YOUR Book?

Many authors think that having a large print order for their published book is important, this in effect hopefully means a lot of copies are getting placed into retail bookstores. When it fact the number of copies being shipped in total is not as important as the sell-through or percent of sale for that book. Every book has a guaranteed sale to the bookseller. When a company orders copies from a publisher directly or through a distributor those copies are guaranteed to sell. Otherwise the unsold copies can be returned to the publisher for full price.

For example, if a bookseller receives an order for 1000 copies from the publisher or distributor and is only able to sell 600 copies to consumers, the 400 remaining copies are called “returns.” In this case the author’s sell-through would be 60 percent. If 300 copies were returned the sell-through would be 70 percent. Sell-through, also referred to as percent of sale, is the key to a successful career as a writer. The higher the sell-through, the more likely any writer will have a bright future as an author.

For published authors it should never be about the total copies out in the market rather the placement of those copies and their potential to sell is the key. Higher sell through or percent of sale is preferred over the number of net copies sold. The higher for both the better, be smart about the business and you have a better chance of continuing as a publisher author.

Q & A for Speakers – Negotiating Fees

Filed under: Guest Author Articles,Speaker Tips — Larry James @ 7:00 am

Jeff Davidson, Guest Author

It is possible for meeting planners who need to negotiate with speakers to stay within their budget. Fee integrity is very important to speakers, to speakers bureaus and meeting planners.

Question: Are there instances when speakers can legitimately fit an organization’s budget without altering their fees?

Answer: Yes. My friend, negotiating specialist Jim Hennig, Ph.D., CPAE, says that speakers can legitimately charge different fees in different situations.

breathingspace1. Multiple engagements: two or more bookings deserve quantity discounts.
2. Dual-purpose engagements: when the speaker accomplishes several things at one speech.
3. A shared speaker: when an organization cannot afford a speaker, they include another organization to share the costs.
4. Product sales: book, audio and other products are included or able to be sold BOR (Back of the Room sales).
5. Trades: Many speakers will trade for a needed product or service from host organization.
6. Different fees for special groups: non-profit organizations, government agencies, etc.
7. Time-of-year fees: lower fees for slow months, such as August or January.

Larry’s NOTE: The cost of developing a keynote address is high. For example a one hour keynote could represent an investment of 40 to 50 hours of work-time. That is why some speakers will not adjust their fee. Consider positioning yourself as an expert, not a speaker. It’s a significant difference in your mind and your clients’ minds. When you’re a speaker, you have a speaking fee, and you get stuck in this sort of discussion about whether to stand firm on fees or not. When you’re an expert, you don’t.

Encourage Your Website Visitors to Write Reviews For Your Book

Filed under: Author Tips,Book Reviews — Larry James @ 7:00 am

Whether published or a self-published author, you probably know that the hardest part is getting your book noticed by lots of readers. Invite your readers to create the buzz for your book for you. Reviews are important tools for evaluating books. Reviews help sell books! Book Reviews – Encourage Reading!

stackofbooksThe best way to start selling books is to tell everyone about it. You don’t have to constantly go around saying how amazing you are but it is always good to be enthusiastic about your book to generate some interest in it. Once people begin to buy your book, encourage them to tell others about it. Exploit any relationship you might have with anyone who reads your book.

A book review is a form of literary criticism or praise in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit. It’s for real people who want to know if your book is worth reading or your service is worth engaging. Reviews can put your book at the top of the stack.

Encourage your Website visitors to write a review for your book on Amazon.com. Instead of paying for expensive advertising, this is a more effective way because this deals with real people who can vouch for your book.

Make it easy for them. For an example of how I use this technique, go to www.CelebrateLove.com/writeareview.htm. When a visitor clicks on a book cover image or the word “review” under one of my books it takes them to a place on Amazon.com where they can write their own review for one of my books.

Social networking works too. Ask readers to Tweet their comments on Twitter. Facebook is another great place for readers to post their comments.

In addition to writing books, I am an award winning wedding officiant. I encourage former brides and grooms to write a review of my “romantic” wedding ceremony on WeddingWire.com. Click here for a look at how I set that up.

Post readers comments on your Blog. You do have a Blog, right? If not go to WordPress.com and start one. Having a blog or a website has several advantages. The first is that it is a great way of attracting new readers to buy your books. A blog or website is an opportunity to give your readers a taste of your style and convince them that they want to see more of your work. Another reason is it’s a great way to keep your readers informed of what you are up to and maintain their interest in your work.

Your comments and tips are always welcome.

Promote Your Book with Radio

Radio appearances are a good way to build your expert status and promote your book. Thousands of broadcast radio and online radio shows interview authors and experts, and you can even start your own show.

To find radio shows in your niche, try online searches such as these:

• Radio talk show + keyword
• Online radio show + keyword

It’s a good idea to start with smaller shows and work your way up as you gain more experience. Online radio can be a great way to hone your interview skills before approaching broadcast stations. Many online radio shows are targeted to a very specific niche, but the audience may be relatively small.

Blog Talk Radio is the largest network of online radio shows. Enter your keywords into the search box on the upper right side of the screen to find shows that are a good fit for you.

talkshowsFor tips on starting your own show on Blog Talk Radio, see their tutorials and read “BlogTalkRadio Offers Books Authors the Opportunity to Host Their Own Shows” by Phyllils Zimbler Miller.

Here are several shows that regularly interview authors:

The Indepedent Author
Today’s Author
Red River Writers Live
Web Talk Radio
Dresser After Dark

Several authors who have been very successful promoting their own books on the radio sell databases of broadcast radio talk shows. Check out these sources:

Gordon’s Radio List includes 1,100 locally produced and nationally syndicated radio shows that interview guests.
Joe Sabah offers a how-to book, an audio program and a database. His book, How to Get on Radio Talk Shows All Across America Without Leaving Home, is also available on Amazon.com.
Alex Carroll offers a radio station database and training materials.

For tips on getting booked on radio shows, see “Five Tips for Writing a Strong Press Release” by Marsha Friedman and “Best Ways to Approach Radio and TV Talk Shows” by Karen Melamed.

For advice on how to be a great radio guest, read Annie Jennings’ “Radio Interview Tips for Authors.”

Don’t forget to list your radio appearances on the Media page of your website. It gives you credibility and shows potential hosts what other shows you have appeared on.
