I rarely have writer’s block because I “think” about writing all the time. When an idea comes to me… I write. The photo below shows a recent flash of inspiration that hit me while I was having a snack at a fast food restaurant. It’s not so important that you can see the words I scribbled, it’s important that you can see that I wrote. This is one of my peculiar and unconventional techniques to get my mind going in the right direction.
While snacking, I got an idea for my business networking blog. I was catching up on reading some mail and had a magazine nearby. I opened the magazine and began looking for something to write on. I removed the APC tear-out ad and began making some notes. When I had made notes on both sides of the card, I tore out a page and kept writing.
When I returned to my office I began to put all these scribbles together to form a new article. If I had waited until I got back to my office I probably would have lost the inspiration and most of what I jotted in my notes.
TIP: When previewing websites, magazines, billboards, newspapers, etc., look for words that trigger new thoughts (about what you are writing) and new ways to express what you need to say… in your own words, of course.
“You don’t always need to be a professional with a degree to write. All you need to start is a book of blank paper and a pen, mixed with a little emotion, inspiration and motivation anyone can use writing as a therapeutic release.” ~ Ally Hart
I have 4 blogs and something new goes up on each blog every forth day. That’s a commitment I made when I began blogging. Fresh content is king! I write every day! I have a passion for writing. I love to write. So… I write.
It takes discipline to be a writer. Commitment to being a writer makes you a writer. Stop using energy thinking about it. It takes a lot of energy to remain confused! Redirect your energy into doing it. Just do it. Walk into your office; open your computer and begin. When the ideas come you must be prepare to write them down.
“The important thing is that there should be a space of time, say four hours a day at least, when a professional writer doesn’t do anything else but write. He doesn’t have to write, and if he doesn’t feel like it he shouldn’t try. He can look out of the window or stand on his head or writhe on the floor, but he is not to do any other positive thing, not read, not write letters, glance at magazines, or write checks. Either write or nothing.” ~ Raymond Chandler, creator of Philip Marlowe and author of novels and screenplays, writing about how he gets himself to do things.
To me writing is an art form of the imagination. It’s a writers duty is to express that art form in words. Embrace the words you write, but – editorially speaking – don’t get to attached to them. I’ve often said that the teacher teaches what the teacher needs to learn. Writing is an adventure! In the research stage an author learns more about the topic and then expresses what he learns in his own words. Sometimes when I go back and read something that I have written 5 or more years ago, I am surprised by the words. It’s a great feeling to know that hopefully others have learned from what I have written.
Don’t wait for inspiration. Just write. Take your time. You cannot rush the creative process.
“Stop using energy thinking about writing. Redirect energy into doing it. Just do it! Walk into your office; open your computer and start.” ~ Jane Northcote, author of “Making Change Happen“
