Neil Gaiman talks to the Open Rights Group about how the internet affects the books and publishing industry. People often ask me about piracy issues and digital rights management (DRM) concerns. I can’t say it any better than Neil has.
It has been long theorized that piracy does not hurt sales. It actually helps sales because it increases visibility. Tim O’Reilly said, “Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy” in a piece written in 2002. He has turned O’Reilly Media into a $100 million publishing powerhouse by correctly forecasting the tech industry’s movements. Tim O’Reilly has removed anti-piracy measures from his e-books. “We’re delighted when people who can’t afford our books don’t pay us for them, if they go out and do something useful with that information,” he says.
